"These
are the things you should do:
Speak he truth to one another;
let there be honesty and peace in the judgments at your gates"
( Zac 8:16)
The true social order depends on the truth which is human nature created in the image and likeness of God which in this case means that this image includes both male and female. Human nature is a reflection of that eternal truth of relationship found in the One God, Father, Son and Spirit and the family is the created realization of the social order.
Social relationships must be based on the truth of the spoken word backed up by action which verifies what one says. If everyone in a society decided to lie, the social order would quickly disintegrate and cease to exist. Truth is also necessary for justice; this is why a witness in a court of law swears to tell the truth before God under pain of perjury. Without truth, there is no justice. Without truth, there is no love. In marriage a man and a women promise to remain faithful till death. In life this may turn out to be a lie with the destructive consequences to family life and social order. The truth is: the union of man and woman was designed by God to be inseparable. Some truths are unspoken like the daily care of a mother for her children. She is daily silently saying, I brought you into the world and I will care for you. This is the heart of true love.
Jonathan Wallace has well expressed on the personal level the disruptive power of untruth,
"I hate being
lied to. Short of violence, it is the worst thing you can do to me.
Not because of God, or the Ten Commandments, or any universal moral precepts.
The reason that I hate lies is because, like you,
I wish to navigate carefully through life, and to do so I must be able to
calculate my true position.
When you lie to me, you know your position but you have given me false data
which obscures mine."
The worse type of untruth is self-deception. "Nothing is easier than self-deceit. For what a man wishes, that he also believes to be true." (Demosthenes) A terrorist who kills himself along with innocent people is deceiving himself or herself in the belief, which he or she holds true, that theirs will be heaven. God promised heaven to the just not to the unjust.
Some refuse to face the truth by rationalizations, that is, giving illogical reasons for a belief or an action. Some justify their actions by saying, "everyone is doing it" meaning it must be right. Some do not accept a truth by saying, "That is what you say" implying that there is no objective truth. A person fails to pay taxes and rationalizes his action on the grounds that government wastes money. Fortunately the majority of people are truthful and in so doing live up to their God-likeness because God is Truth and also bring harmony and peace among men. Ultimately in the heavenly social order or God's kingdom will be a truthful Kingdom.
