The rose shows up in Dante's poetry as a manifold symbol of God's love which encompasses all of the Redemption reality. In the Paradiso we find the rose symbolizing Mary and also the Eternal Heaven thus,
"Thy
sides were made to shelter and relume
The Love whose warmth within the timeless peace
Quickened the seed of this immortal bloom."
Canto
32:7-9)
Mary first sheltered the "seed" which is God's Son as man which was the pivotal beginning of all degrees of grace and glory found the "immortal bloom", the Rose of Heaven.
"So,
now displayed before me as a rose
Of snow white
purity, the sacred might
I saw, whom with His
blood Christ made his spouse."
(Paradiso
Canto 31:1-3)
The petals of the rose are the dwelling places of countless saints before and after Christ which symbolize the different degrees of glory of those who are in heaven. The angels, like bees, weaving in and out of the Eternal Rose mediate God's love and peace in the heavenly realm. Heaven to Dante is-
"Pure
intellectual light, fulfilled with love,
Love of the true Good,
filled with all delight,
Transcending sweet
delight, all sweet above."
(Paradiso Canto 30:40-42)
So the rose, one of God beautiful creatures and symbol of love, points beyond itself to a Love to which all creatures aspire because only in God's eternal presence can creatures find fulfillment ecstatic joy.
