"For our struggle is not with flesh and blood

but with the principalities, with the powers,

with the world rulers of this present darkness,

with the evil spirits in the heavens. "
(Eph 6:12)

The culture of death is a pervasive way of interpreting the world about us which involves public opinion, social institutions, the communication media and governments. Is this pervasive culture purely a human construct or are there hidden influences affecting our feelings and thinking to lead us in the direction of death?

Humanity is caught up in a cosmic struggle for life. The Devil as a corporate personality is a being of power bent on bringing about destruction and death upon mankind by his illusory promises. He is tempting us to enjoy life without restraint, get rid of the unborn and the weak and you will have a better life. Create a culture devoid of God because you are gods who one day will be able to live forever by the use of technology. Thus, through human self-centered decisions, Satan is bringing many to spiritual and physical death.

Christ as the Son of God came not only to destroy sin and death but also to break the stronghold Satan had over mankind. One day at the synagogue of Caparnaum there was a man with an unclean spirit who cried out with a loud voice "What have you to do with us, Jesus of Nazareth? Have you come to destroy us? I know who you are--the Holy One of God!" Jesus rebuked him and said, "Be quiet! Come out of him!" Then the demon threw the man down in front of them and came out of him without doing him any harm." (Lk 4:34-35) Christ, in principle, destroyed sin, death and the power of the principalities over mankind by his death-resurrection. But this victory is contingent on man's free will, that is, on mankind's willingness to accept Christ as the Son of God. Many in today's world do not accept Christ and His Church teaching of what constitutes good or evil. Ultimately, evil cannot defeat God's plan of salvation but many by their own choices in life and unrepented death will join Satan's kingdom of darkness. What you decide today will determine your tomorrow. And let us not forget that we have the power of the good angels who also engage the powers of darkness to help mankind on its way to fullness of life in God.

Let us ask the help of St. Michael the Archangel against the powers of darkness and death.

Saint Michael the Archangel,
defend us in battle.
Be our protection against the wickedness and snares of the devil.
May God rebuke him, we humbly pray;
and do Thou, O Prince of the Heavenly Host -
by the Divine Power of God -
cast into hell, Satan and all the evil spirits,
who roam throughout the world seeking the ruin of souls.
