God designed our eyes with wisdom, in the sight of the the light of the sun. The lens focuses light with muscles which vary its roundness. The retina is packed with 125 million light sensitive cells. Our eyes only see a small range of the sun's electromagnetic radiation (from violet to deep red) and there is a reason for this. To see radio waves would require eyes the size of satellite dishes. On the other hand, if we could see ultraviolet rays (heat radiation) all reality would glow including the eye itself which would impair clarity of vision. The strangest part of all, we do not see light itself. We only see light reflected from objects or when our retina is struck by a light source itself. Although outer space if full of sunlight, it is totally black to our eyes.
Although the eye records the image and colors it is upside down and it is ultimately the mind which processes the image information so we can see. The eye has the light image but I see.
Christ said, "I am the light of the world". (Jn 9:5)
In what sense are we to understand this?
One day Jesus met a man born blind. Perhaps he was born with no retina in his eyes. Jesus healed him by applying wet clay to his eyes. The Son of God who made the sun to shine in the sky also made human eyes to see, so He is the "Light of the world" in a physical sense. But this was not the ultimate purpose of this miracle. After the man had been questioned by the authorities who did not believe that Jesus had opened his eyes, Jesus met him and said to him, "Do you believe in the Son of Man? The man wanted to know who the Son of Man was, so Jesus answered, "You have seen him and the one speaking to you is he." The man said, "I believe, Lord" and it is written, "He worshiped him." (Jn 9:35-37) Belief in Jesus as the Son of God frees our minds from the ignorance of human destiny, reveals to us God as a loving Father, and frees us from the Sin of the world. We pass from spiritual darkness into the light of revelation.
St. Paul has well stated the mystery of light thus,
"For God who said,
'Let the light shine out of darkness,'
has shown in our hearts
to bring to light the knowledge of the glory of God
on the face of [Jesus] Christ."
(2 Cor 4:6)
Be Thou my Vision, O Lord of my heart;
Naught be all else to me, save that Thou art
Thou my best Thought, by day or by night,
Waking or sleeping, Thy presence my light. ....
