The great flood happened c. 2900 B.C. and at the end of it God directed Noah and his sons to "Be fertile and multiply and fill the earth." (Gn 9:1) Some of the descendants of Ham migrated to the land of Shinar, that is, a region of southern Mesopotamia.

Noah's great grandson, Nimrod established there the "first kingdom of earth" by subjugating peoples and putting them to work on his projects. His chief cities were Babylon, Erech, Accad. From the land of Shinar Nimrod went to Asshur, where he built the cities of Nineveh, Rehoboth-Ir, Calah and Resen. He also began the building of Ziggurats (Tower Temples) and perverted religion by making it serve the city and state. In Rabbinical literature he is considered the one who made everyone rebel against God. After Nimrod died his wife Semiramis claimed that he had become a sun god and was to be worshipped. By 2000 B.C. mud-brick ziggurats were being constructed in many cities of Mesopotamia. The Temple Tower of Ur, for example, was dedicated to the moon god Nanna-Sin and the one of Babylon to the city god Marduk.

The story of the tower of Babel in Genesis 11is based on the traditions about the temple towers of Babylonia which our Yawist author may have visited and seen the ruins of some. As he tells the story, they said:

"Come, let us build ourselves a city and a tower with its top in the sky,
and so make a name for ourselves;
otherwise we shall be scattered all over the earth."
The LORD came down to see the city and the tower ...
and there confuse their language,
so that one will not understand what another says."
Thus the LORD scattered them from there all over the earth,
and they stopped building the city. (Gn 11:4-8)

Now we are faced with a contradiction. On the one hand, Genesis 10 tells us that the diversity of people was good and ordained by God; on the other hand, in this account the diversity of peoples and languages is seen as a punishment for sin.

Genesis 10 was written by a priest who is interested primarily in the facts of history. Genesis 11, on the other hand, was written by a Yahwist who reduces historical facts to symbols to illustrate "man's increasing wickedness, shown here in his presumptuous effort to create an urban culture apart from God" . (Comment in the New American Bible) The author uses the 300 feet tall Ziggurat of Babylon called (Etemananki) which means "the foundation stone of heaven and earth" or as the genesis author sees it "with its top to the sky" as a symbol of pride. He sees different languages as preventing communication between peoples and the unity of mankind. Unity was the gift of God but man made bad use of it and God took it back. Diversity tainted by pride can lead to antagonism, war and destruction. 44 Both diversity and unity, although good in themselves, are tainted by man's tendency to glorify himself.

The kingdom of Nimrod and later Babylonian Kingdoms were destined for destruction due to the inherent sinful ideological propensities in human nature which seek to build kingdoms in man's image.

The Babel of Ideological Democracy

Our founding fathers defined the rights of man under God as follows:

"We hold these truths to be self-evident, that all men are created equal, that they are endowed by their Creator with certain unalienable Rights, that among these are Life, Liberty and the pursuit of Happiness. --That to secure these rights, Governments are instituted among Men, deriving their just powers from the consent of the governed, ...."

Democratic principles in so far as they reflect the Natural Law (Order established by God) will stand the test of time but American Democracy is destined for destruction because it has made a human document an absolute reference point for lawyers who twist its meaning to mean what they want it to mean.

All power to govern comes from God. People have a right to choose their leaders but these leaders are ultimately responsible to God. Public option in American Culture has become a rule to judge weather an act of government is right or wrong.

Although we are a nation founded under God, there is an effort to eliminate the name of God in our public meetings under the pretense of Freedom of Religion.

Equality under the law is now used to obliterate the differences inherent in the nature of man and woman. So woman who by nature tends to preserve life is now sent into battle thus diminishing her sensitivity to life.

Our government which has the duty to protect life has given the woman the "right" which is not her's to kill her unborn child. Now man seeks to create life in his own image, cloning appears on the horizon which is contrary to the diversity of life inherent in the nature of things.

The false idea of freedom in marriage, that is the "right" to divorce and remarriage is allowed by the laws of our county. This was not so from the beginning as established by God. "What God has joined together, let no man put asunder." Children grow up feeling unloved and uncared for with disastrous consequences. Worse still, government has begun to accept homosexual and lesbian marriages which are contrary to the nature of things.

And so like Babylon,
we are destined to perish
because we have made an idea into a god.
