D. POVERTY OF SPIRIT: SILENCE

Keep your mouth shot,

Guard your senses,

And life is full.

Open your mouth,

Always be busy,

And life is beyond hope.

(Tao Te Ching, ch. 22)

To become poor in spirit means to let ourselves go into God's Silence.

Let go of external noise and distractions, your plans and doings, your imaginings and fears into the deeper silence of your being where God's Spirit can bring an awareness beyond words and imaginings. "Be still and know that I am God." (Ps. 46:10)

What is the silence of God? "God is love, and silence is the perfect communication of the Father and the Son through the Holy Spirit of love ..., not in words, but in the silence of one Word." (George A. Maloney, S.J.)
