The face is the primary way human beings communicate. At first glance you can tell the identity of a person, approximate age and emotional state. A woman's smile indicates her desire to be liked or seen as beautiful. Raised eyelashes indicates surprise, an open mouth may express awe, etc. We further define the personality of a human being by the things he or she tells us. All other means of communication such as a written letter, a telephone call or ever the use camera-voice means of communication fall short of a face to face meeting.

This is why the Hebrew sought God by searching for his face. In the Psalm we read: "Seek the face of the LORD in his strength; seek his face continually. (Ps 104:5) They were to seek to know, love and serve God all the days of their lives. A cry for help reads, "Do not hide your face from me in the day of my distress. Turn your ear to me; when I call, answer me quickly. (Ps 102:3) The priest blessed the people with the following words, "The LORD bless you and keep you! The LORD let his face shine upon you, and be gracious to you! The LORD look upon you kindly and give you peace!" (Nm 6:24-26) On the other hand the sinner was warned , "The face of the LORD is against evildoers...." (Ps 34:10)

"LORD,... LET US SEE YOUR FACE AND WE SHALL BE SAVED." (Ps 80:20) This was indeed the prophetic cry of Israel since the Son of God took on a human face through which we understand the thoughts and ways of God.

One day the apostle Philip asked Jesus to show them the Father. Jesus replied, "Whoever has seen me has seen The Father, and how do you say, 'Show us The Father'?” Indeed in the "Face of Christ", that is in his countenance, words and actions we see the love and compassion of the Father for mankind. Jesus died on the Cross you save us from sin. When we turn to him he offers us the saving forgiveness of the Father who listens to his Son because he shed his blood to justify us in the sight of his Father and our Father. And so we cry,"Lord Jesus, Son of God, have mercy on me a sinner". It is through Christ that the Father forgives us, even for those who ask for God's forgiveness without knowing Christ. This is why Jesus is called "the Savior of the World".

We now have the vision of God through reason and faith which is like looking seeing Him in a dark mirror, but than we shall see him face to face, as he is. You might say, how is this possible for a limited creature to see the infinite God? And I ask you, how was it possible for the eternal God to enter time? This is possible because we are made in the image of God. But God has to transfigure our souls beyond concepts and beliefs to an intuitive vision of Himself which "Eye has not seen nor ear heard, nor has it entered into the heart of man what things God has prepared for those who love him." (St. Paul) Like fall leaves which take on the glow of the sun with its varied colors, so our souls will glow with the glory of God and our bodies will changed with the ability to pass thorough solid matter and to go wherever we will. "The Beatific Vision means a sight which contains in itself the power of banishing all pain, all sorrow from the beholder, and of infusing, in their stead, joy and happiness." (Fr. J. Boudreau, S.J., The happiness of Heaven, Tan Books and Publishers, Inc., 1984, p.7) And we will be forever happy.
