My Country, 'Tis of Thee (Please click photo to hear)

My country, ';tis of thee,
Sweet land of liberty,
Of thee I sing;
Land where my fathers died,
Land of the pilgrim's pride,
From every mountain side
Let freedom ring.

Our fathers' God, to thee,
Author of liberty,
To thee I sing;
Long may our land be bright
With freedom's holy light;
Protect us by thy might,
Great God, our King.

In the pages which follow I will probe the essense and meaning of freedom. What is the nature and purpose of freedom? Freedom from what and to do what? "Certain currents of modern thought have gone so far as to exalt freedom to such an extent that it becomes an absolute, whch would then be the source of values." (John Paul II, The Splendor or Truth, 2:12) If freedom is the means to an end, what is that end?

In the hymn above, God is recognized as the author of freedom, so my first page will explain the freedom of God.
