Discoveries of science within the past 50 years are moving scientific thinking toward the realization of the metaphysical.

Einstein discovered that matter is bottled energy, that atoms are made up of energy particles/waves bound together in an energy field. He also made us aware the photons of light exhibited both the characteristics of particles as well as waves. Louis de Broglie extended this reality to all matter. Science is slowly being moved toward the realization that underlying all material phenomena lies information and information as such is non-material, a product of mind.

Likewise the study of living organisms has revealed that DNA is found in the nucleus of all living cells of an organism. It is a chemical code or information of the structure and functions of the organism. This coded information is a product of intelligence and as such non-physical. Information is inscribed in living organisms but the living form is not the origin of information.

And what about the connection between brain and mind? Gerald L. Schroeder makes this astute observation, "There is a brilliant design in the brain, and to make it requires the nature of our universe, which means we need a metaphysical force, a potential not composed of time, space, or matter that created the time, space and matter of our universe." (Gerald L Schroeder, The Hidden Face of God, Simon & Schuster, NY 2001, p. 149)

Further, the same set of laws which govern the countless stars in millions of galaxies also govern the reactions within the 0.001 centimeters of the cell. Science cannot explain why the universe is so inteligible which indicates that the metaphysical is hidden within the physical.

Life forms cannot be the products of chance because their biological dynamics are too complex. For example: "Each cell, every cell in your body, is selecting right now approximately five hundred thousand amino acids, consisting of some ten million atoms, organizing them into preselected strings, joining them together, checking to be certain each string is folded into specific shapes, and then shipping each protein off to a site, some inside the cell, some outside, sites that somehow have signaled a need for the specified proteins. Every second. Every cell. Your body, and mine too, is a living wonder." (Ibid., p. 62)

Science is moving toward the realization that a universal mind is as work in creation as a constant as the law of gravity. Yet the mind of God is His Essence which means that He is Mind and beyond our dualistic way of thinking. God does not see creation as the object of his thought because He is its existential creator. This mind of God is the inherent reason in every creature which makes it be what it is. God is the first cause of all creation but he rules his creatures through many secondary causes who knowingly or unknowingly do His Will. "Drawn from nothing by God's power, wisdom, and goodness, it can do nothing if it is cut off from its origin, for 'without the Creator the creature vanishes.'" (Catechism of the Catholic Church #308)

So science is revealing to us the hidden Wisdom of God so beautifully described in the Bible as follows:

"For in her is a spirit intelligent, holy, unique,

Manifold, subtle, agile, clear, unstained, certain,

Not baneful, loving the good, keen, unhampered, beneficent, kindly,

Firm, secure, tranquil, all-powerful, all-seeing,

And pervading all spirits, though they be intelligent, pure and very subtle.

For Wisdom is mobile beyond all motion, and she penetrates and pervades all things by reason of her purity.

For she is an aura of the might of God and a pure effusion of the glory of the Almighty; therefore nought that is sullied enters into her.

For she is the refulgence of eternal light, the spotless mirror of the power of God, the image of his goodness." (Ws 7:23-25)
