Each day there are 360,000 babies are born into our world and according to the common teaching of theologians each one of them, not only baptized infants, is assigned by God a guardian angel. Christ made this plainly clear when he declared, “See that you do not despise one of these little ones, for I say to you that their angels in heaven always look upon the face of my heavenly Father." (Mt 18:10) Further Ps 91:11-12) reads, "For he commands his angels with regard to you, to guard you wherever you go." (Ps 91:11) and "Are they not all ministering spirits sent to serve, for the sake of those who are to inherit salvation?" (Hb 1:14)

The Catholic Church teaches: "From its beginning until death, human life is surrounded by their watchful care and intercession."Beside each believer stands an angel as protector and shepherd leading him to life. 'Already here on earth the Christian life shares by faith in the blessed company of angels and men united in God.'" (Cat. of Cath. Church, #336)

The Benedictine Sisters of the perpetual adoration has written an insightful book on the role of the Guardian Angel in our lives. Here I quote: "The celestial patrons, ...are close to the merciful Heart of the Redeemer; they understand, therefore, His untiring concern for our welfare, and from that inexhaustible Fountain of love they imbibe the tenderest affection in our regard. They know, too, that we, their relatives--not in the flesh but through the spirit element in our nature--are destined to share their glory, to be their fellow-citizens in Heaven, and one day enter into their unending companionship. In their unselfishness of their love, they are anxious for the period of probation to close triumphantly." (The Guardian Angels"Our Heavenly Companions by the Benedictine Sisters of the Perpetual Adoration, p. 152)

How do angels love?

In order to understand the unselfish love of angels for themselves, for other angels and mankind, we must compare it with the love of animals and men.
An animal such as your dog or cat cannot love without physical emotions. "Physical emotion are moved by chemicals, nerve endings, weather, dsigestion, hormones, and a thousand other things in the body of the physical world." (Peter Kreeft, Angels and Demons, Igantius Press, San Francisco, 1995, p. 1019), A dog or cat does not have the intelligence to distinguish between selfish and unselfish love.
Human love, however, includes, intelligence, will and emotions. Human love can range from lust (selfish love) to self-sacrifice, the willingness to sacrifice one life for the love of another human being or for the love of God.
Angels can't love with physical emotions because they do not have a body. Their love involves only intelligence and free will; it's a purely a spiritual love which is unselfish, willing only our good. "Angels can understand human feeling, such as distress ... but they cannot become distressed themselves." (Ibid., p. 1032) The love of our guardian angel is not subject to change. They love unconditionally and will the the good or our body and soul.

I am now 83 years old and due to my lung cancer I have lost the sexual urge which colored the love of woman prior to this. So, I now understand the love of woman without self-interest wishing only her own good.

I will now turn to my experience with my Guardian Angel.

I am now 83 years old and about 2 months ago I was diagnosed with lung cancer which I did not expect since I never smoked. This is a very painful experience in my life to the point where I thought God wanted me be pay for my sins (Purgatory) in this life. I did not know if I was going to live or die. Since Blessed Father Anthony Moreau, the cofounder of the Brothers of Holy Cross needed one miracle in order to be declared a Saint, I made a Novena asking him to to ask God to completely cure me. It did not happen.

I never had a devotion to my guardian angel or to any angel but for some reason I instinctively turned to him in my hours of need. I felt that he heard my pain and that help was on the way. I used the traditional prayer as you see here or spoke with in my own words. Since than I pray to him every day.

Pascal P. Parente expresses beautifully the role of Guardian Angels thus:Yes, they love man, they protect him, they inspire him with holy thoughts and desires, they offer his prayers, his good works, his sufferings and his tears to God and pray for him."
